Victorian and Federation

The gold rushes of the 1850s and self-government in 1856 made Sydney a rich city, and its public buildings show it. James Barnet, Colonial Architect for nearly thirty years, built the Post Office and the Lands Department in Pyrmont sandstone, while Edmund Blacket and William Wardell built the university and the cathedrals in Gothic. Red brick and terracotta came with the Queen Anne style in the 1880s. Around Federation in 1901, the Government Architect Walter Vernon built Central Station and the classical front of the Art Gallery, and began the Mitchell Library, finished in 1942.
